[12:50] Anya Quixote: Thanks, dope!
[12:50] dope Zepp: Metaphor
[12:50] dope Zepp: was it a successful class?

[12:50] Metaphor Voom: I think so
[12:50] Metaphor Voom: I think that all of these exhibits
[12:50] Anya Quixote: You can leave this up as long as you need, Metaphor. Send out a notice when we need to clean them out
[12:50] Metaphor Voom: could become conference presentations
[12:50] Metaphor Voom: that is the FIRST time I have ever thought that
[12:50] dope Zepp: i have heard rumblings that it is silly to teach this way
[12:50] Metaphor Voom: for any class. EVER
[12:50] Metaphor Voom: silly to teach in SL?
[12:50] Metaphor Voom: why?
[12:51] dope Zepp: yes
[12:51] Metaphor Voom: Silly to whom?
[12:51] Anya Quixote: I've heard the same thing from students in my department-- doesn't take me long to convert them
[12:51] dope Zepp: that it could be just as effective as a a series of vids
[12:51] dope Zepp: or traditional on-line offering
[12:51] dope Zepp: yess
[12:51] dope Zepp: the profs i talked to about it
[12:51] dope Zepp: dont use sl
[12:51] Metaphor Voom: well I hope the way I use SL is not like a traditional online course
[12:52] Izabel Monday: ha...definitely not
[12:52] Metaphor Voom: I resisted teaching online
[12:52] Metaphor Voom: until SL
[12:52] dope Zepp: how does it differ?
[12:52] Anya Quixote: I think people are skeptical of how well this will work... but I like how we have used it to talk about so many different topics
[12:52] Metaphor Voom: and this semester I did some things differently than last semester
[12:52] Metaphor Voom: and last semester some things I did not do this semester
[12:52] Metaphor Voom: one big difference for me is the realtime interaction
[12:52] dope Zepp: yess
[12:52] Metaphor Voom: through voice
[12:52] Metaphor Voom: text
[12:52] Metaphor Voom: and IM
[12:52] Metaphor Voom: simultaneously
[12:52] dope Zepp: i have had two great discussions here
[12:52] dope Zepp: so far
[12:52] Tatiana Starship: I think SL is dynamic and interactive in a way that video is not
[12:52] dope Zepp: all of which is logged
[12:53] dope Zepp: specifically ow?
[12:53] Anya Quixote: For me, being in SL made me more comfortable participating
[12:53] dope Zepp: how?
[12:53] Anya Quixote: since Anya is not me, I did not have to be shy
[12:53] dope Zepp: yes
[12:53] dope Zepp: me too
[12:53] Tatiana Starship: you really have to use it..struggle with it..create in it to begin to see the potential
[12:53] Metaphor Voom: yes Metaphor is not Dr Carpenter
[12:53] dope Zepp: what about decorum
[12:53] Metaphor Voom: Metaphor can engage students in ways Dr Carpenter cannot or will not or should not
[12:53] Metaphor Voom: decorum?
[12:53] dope Zepp: mmm
[12:53] Anya Quixote: Anya is sort of Lacey, but she is becoming her own person
[12:53] dope Zepp: i mean
[12:53] Metaphor Voom: expectations?
[12:54] Metaphor Voom: manners?
[12:54] dope Zepp: you interact differently as Metaphor correct?
[12:54] dope Zepp: yah
[12:54] Metaphor Voom: I like to think I do
[12:54] dope Zepp: mmm
[12:54] dope Zepp: i think it is lovely
[12:54] Metaphor Voom: for example...Metaphor is online at anytime
[12:54] Metaphor Voom: and therefore has office hours at 3am
[12:54] Metaphor Voom: sometimes
[12:54] Failli Constantine: since I've been moving the balls so long I'm having a physical first life reaction to it
[12:54] Metaphor Voom: Dr C would not do that
[12:55] dope Zepp: mmm
[12:55] almar Loon: me too!
[12:55] Metaphor Voom: also if students need to "talk behind my back" they can do that with IM in SL
[12:55] dope Zepp: have you met this semesters students RL?
[12:55] Metaphor Voom: whispers in a face to face class disrupt other students
[12:55] dope Zepp: yess
[12:55] dope Zepp: good point
[12:55] Metaphor Voom: yes the Texas A&M students
[12:55] Metaphor Voom: but not the Texas Woman's University students
[12:55] Tatiana Starship: I love the side discussions
[12:55] Metaphor Voom: and last year
[12:55] Metaphor Voom: when I taught this course
[12:55] Metaphor Voom: I had students from University of North Texas
[12:56] Metaphor Voom: I did not meet them face to face until almost a year later
[12:56] Anya Quixote: I love the dual conversations: the one in the classroom, and the one in SL
[12:56] Metaphor Voom: at a conference
[12:56] dope Zepp: wow
[12:56] Metaphor Voom: where we gave a presentation together
[12:56] Metaphor Voom: SL also allows the students to construct the learning space
[12:56] Metaphor Voom: in ways that traditional face to face does not
[12:56] Metaphor Voom: and traditional online
[12:56] Metaphor Voom: for example
[12:56] Metaphor Voom: in n our SL course
[12:56] Metaphor Voom: each student gets a studio apartment
[12:56] dope Zepp: mmm
[12:56] Metaphor Voom: to furnish and "live in" for the semester
[12:57] Metaphor Voom: on Blackboard students do not have their own "spaces:
[12:57] Metaphor Voom: that they can construct for their own purposes
[12:57] dope Zepp: and you feel these spaces lead to a different kind of interaction between students and faculty?
[12:57] Metaphor Voom: yes I do
[12:58] dope Zepp: or student / subject interaction
[12:58] Metaphor Voom: I get to know my students differently in this way
[12:58] Metaphor Voom: students get to know each other differently too
[12:58] dope Zepp: yes
[12:58] Metaphor Voom: and we--students and faculty--often invite visitors to the class
[12:58] Metaphor Voom: to participate
[12:58] Metaphor Voom: to see what we are doing
[12:58] Anya Quixote: Metaohor, Tatiana, and dope, I have to leave, but thank you so much!
[12:58] dope Zepp: ty Anya
[12:58] Metaphor Voom: that does not happen easily in other course delivery systems
[12:58] Metaphor Voom: ok ANya
[12:58] Metaphor Voom: see you later
[12:58] Anya Quixote: I love the discussion that happening now, and dope, I really appreciate your thoughts on my work
[12:58] Metaphor Voom: thank you sooooo much
[12:58] Anya Quixote: Bye bye!
[12:59] dope Zepp: the dynamic is
[12:59] dope Zepp: not the willing suspension fo disbelief
[12:59] dope Zepp: and it is not monologue
[13:00] dope Zepp: and not static
[13:00] Metaphor Voom: you mean the nature of this course in SL?
[13:00] Metaphor Voom: correct
[13:00] dope Zepp: well
[13:00] Metaphor Voom: it is quite postmodern
[13:00] dope Zepp: i heve never doen a course in sl
[13:00] dope Zepp: but
[13:00] dope Zepp: my project for Dr. Kundu is in sl
[13:00] Metaphor Voom: the "ownership" of the course content is less "mine" in SL
[13:00] dope Zepp: i try to get her in here
[13:01] dope Zepp: really
[13:01] dope Zepp: less yours?
[13:01] Metaphor Voom: well SL is not for everyone I think
[13:01] dope Zepp: how so?
[13:01] Metaphor Voom: the course content in my view is not the "property" of instructors'
[13:01] dope Zepp: you are still guiding the discourse
[13:01] Metaphor Voom: or something they "give" to students
[13:01] Metaphor Voom: I believe in constructivist learning
[13:01] Metaphor Voom: yes of course...by virtue of the fact I designed the syllabus
[13:01] Metaphor Voom: selected the texts
[13:01] Metaphor Voom: decided we would use SL
[13:02] dope Zepp: mmm
[13:02] Metaphor Voom: but I do not restrict "where" we go with the course
[13:02] Metaphor Voom: my students help me make that decision
[13:02] dope Zepp: YAY
[13:02] Metaphor Voom: they teach me
[13:02] Metaphor Voom: I learn so much each semester from my students
[13:02] dope Zepp: seems democratic!
[13:02] Metaphor Voom: yes I hope so
[13:02] dope Zepp: i want to copy and paste this conversation
[13:03] Metaphor Voom: I intend it to be that way...within the restrictions of the institution we work in...University settings...
[13:03] dope Zepp: and send to grumblers
[13:03] Metaphor Voom: why not?
[13:03] Metaphor Voom: see that is something else SL allows
[13:03] dope Zepp: yesss
[13:03] Metaphor Voom: we have saved all of our class discussions this way
[13:03] Metaphor Voom: so taking notes is done differently/can be done differently
[13:03] dope Zepp: did you consider IRB stuff?
[13:03] Metaphor Voom: and I use voice and text sometimes
[13:03] dope Zepp: or is this not research...
[13:04] dope Zepp: mmm
[13:04] Metaphor Voom: i am not using this course AS research
[13:04] Metaphor Voom: so I did not have to do any IRB to teach the course
[13:04] dope Zepp: i heard from a french prof
[13:04] almar Loon: Bye everyone -- it was a great semester!
[13:04] dope Zepp: who sends his student to french sl locations
[13:04] Metaphor Voom: by almar
[13:04] Metaphor Voom: tanks for everything
[13:04] Tatiana Starship: bye.. have a great summer
[13:04] Metaphor Voom: we will be in touch
[13:04] dope Zepp: that IRB is not required for research here
[13:04] Failli Constantine: Thank Metaphor
[13:05] Metaphor Voom: Thank you Failli
[13:05] dope Zepp: nice talking to you Alma
[13:05] Metaphor Voom: I look forward to talking with you more about the semester too
[13:05] dope Zepp: almar
[13:05] Failli Constantine: loved the beach balls, great ideas came out of playing with them
[13:05] Metaphor Voom: thanks for joining us Failli
[13:05] Metaphor Voom: great Failli...keep me posted
[13:05] Failli Constantine: I will
[13:05] Metaphor Voom: Dope...
[13:05] Failli Constantine: bye!
[13:05] dope Zepp looks at metaphor
[13:05] Metaphor Voom: I do not know that IRB is not needed in SL but
[13:06] Metaphor Voom: one certainly does not need IRB in SL always
[13:06] dope Zepp: mmm
[13:06] dope Zepp: i will do an ethnography course next semester
[13:06] Metaphor Voom: I have not looked deeply at the uses and implications of IRB in SL but that is one of my next projects
[13:06] dope Zepp: and hope to structure qualitiative research in sl
[13:06] Metaphor Voom: there are many people teaching ethnography in SL
[13:06] Metaphor Voom: there are models already
[13:06] dope Zepp: fascinating
[13:06] Metaphor Voom: i recommend you contact the ISTE group
[13:07] dope Zepp: i need to get access to those!!
[13:07] dope Zepp: ok
[13:07] Metaphor Voom: or even the Educators Coop group
[13:07] dope Zepp: ISTE
[13:07] Metaphor Voom: Internationals Society for Technology in Teacher Education
[13:07] dope Zepp: ahhh

[13:07] Metaphor Voom: yes thank you for the chat dope

[13:08] Metaphor Voom: yes thank you
[13:09] dope Zepp: hey box boy
[13:09] Tatiana Starship: hey :)
[13:09] dope Zepp: which project is yours?
[13:09] Tatiana Starship: I'm just a box today
[13:09] dope Zepp: yay
[13:10] dope Zepp: i think its cute
[13:10] Tatiana Starship: ...the really simple one about Etopia a site in SL
[13:10] dope Zepp: mmm
[13:10] dope Zepp: i think i have different emotion box heads somewhere
[13:10] Tatiana Starship: what's your background?

VIRTUAL GALLERY DIALOGUE: Winston Tweak

The following dialogue takes place between two avatars in a virtual gallery. The gallery features work loosely organized around the idea of 'superflat.' a phrase coined by artist Takashi Murakami. The gallery was constructed as a social interface, a place where self and culture are shaped through dialogue.i usually begin the dialogue by asking what i seen, and why it is seen that way. From there the dialogue takes on a life of its own and begins to shape itself around a particular dynamic which I think is part of the marriage between virtual experience engaged in aesthetic or empathetic understandingSome of the images referred to in the dialogue appear in this blog and other entries with the tag virtual gallery dialogue..

[2010/04/19 10:24] Brent Afterthought: do you see anything similar about the pics?
[2010/04/19 10:24] Winston Tweak: They all look Japanese? :P

[2010/04/19 10:24] Brent Afterthought: mmm
[2010/04/19 10:24] Winston Tweak: But besides that,not really. :P
[2010/04/19 10:24] Brent Afterthought: do you relate to them?
[2010/04/19 10:24] Winston Tweak: No. XD
[2010/04/19 10:24] Winston Tweak: Not even a little bit
[2010/04/19 10:24] Winston Tweak: I've always been like that
[2010/04/19 10:24] Winston Tweak: with Japanese art
[2010/04/19 10:25] Brent Afterthought: do you know why?
[2010/04/19 10:25] Winston Tweak: There's too much emotion. :P
[2010/04/19 10:25] Brent Afterthought: can you describe that 'emotion' ?
[2010/04/19 10:25] Winston Tweak: Nope, it's too much for me, which is why I cant' relate to Japanese art very well.
[2010/04/19 10:26] Winston Tweak: For real I can't even explain
[2010/04/19 10:26] Brent Afterthought: mmm
[2010/04/19 10:26] Brent Afterthought: is ok
[2010/04/19 10:26] Winston Tweak: :P
[2010/04/19 10:26] Brent Afterthought: you mean like
[2010/04/19 10:26] Brent Afterthought: TMI much
[2010/04/19 10:26] Brent Afterthought: or emotionally?
[2010/04/19 10:26] Winston Tweak: Hhmmm
[2010/04/19 10:26] Winston Tweak: when I look at art
[2010/04/19 10:26] Winston Tweak: I kind of visualize
[2010/04/19 10:26] Winston Tweak: what the artist was trying to say
[2010/04/19 10:26] Winston Tweak: what they wanted to show you, that sort of thing
[2010/04/19 10:26] Winston Tweak: but usually with Japanese art
[2010/04/19 10:26] Winston Tweak: Their language
[2010/04/19 10:26] Winston Tweak: is very different from mine
[2010/04/19 10:26] Winston Tweak: and I find their stuff
[2010/04/19 10:27] Winston Tweak: to be very abstract
[2010/04/19 10:27] Winston Tweak: and I get the feeling that my interpretation is wrong
[2010/04/19 10:27] Brent Afterthought: so something is being said
[2010/04/19 10:27] Brent Afterthought: but
[2010/04/19 10:27] Brent Afterthought: the meaning is confusing
[2010/04/19 10:27] Winston Tweak: Quite right. :P
[2010/04/19 10:27] Brent Afterthought: is it disturbing at all?
[2010/04/19 10:27] Winston Tweak: Yes.
[2010/04/19 10:27] Winston Tweak: Very much
[2010/04/19 10:27] Winston Tweak: That one with the two people kissing blood
[2010/04/19 10:27] Winston Tweak: And that buy
[2010/04/19 10:28] Winston Tweak: boy
[2010/04/19 10:28] Winston Tweak: spewing blood from who knows where
[2010/04/19 10:28] Winston Tweak: That ain't my style. :P
[2010/04/19 10:28] Brent Afterthought: mmm
[2010/04/19 10:28] Brent Afterthought: i understand
[2010/04/19 10:28] Winston Tweak: But I'm sure there's a lot of beauty in that art work
[2010/04/19 10:28] Brent Afterthought: would you say the work is dark?
[2010/04/19 10:28] Winston Tweak: I just can't see it
[2010/04/19 10:28] Winston Tweak: Yes.
[2010/04/19 10:28] Winston Tweak: I would
[2010/04/19 10:28] Winston Tweak: Most of it
[2010/04/19 10:28] Brent Afterthought: what strikes me
[2010/04/19 10:28] Brent Afterthought: is the darkness of the content
[2010/04/19 10:29] Brent Afterthought: but the lightness of the 'form'
[2010/04/19 10:29] Brent Afterthought: do you know what i mean by the form?
[2010/04/19 10:29] Winston Tweak: Yeah. ;]
[2010/04/19 10:29] Brent Afterthought: if you think just about the form
[2010/04/19 10:29] Brent Afterthought: and divorce yourself from the content
[2010/04/19 10:30] Brent Afterthought: what does that do....
[2010/04/19 10:30] Winston Tweak: Well
[2010/04/19 10:30] Winston Tweak: It's very random
[2010/04/19 10:30] Winston Tweak: The style of this stuff is so drastically different
[2010/04/19 10:30] Winston Tweak: The form is indeed light. :P
[2010/04/19 10:30] Brent Afterthought: do you recognize any of the 'styles'?
[2010/04/19 10:31] Winston Tweak: Nope. XD
[2010/04/19 10:31] Winston Tweak: I'm not much of an artist
[2010/04/19 10:31] Brent Afterthought: some of this art, and the artists who make it, were brought up with comic books
[2010/04/19 10:31] Brent Afterthought: and 'anime'
[2010/04/19 10:32] Brent Afterthought: you know about those things?
[2010/04/19 10:32] Winston Tweak: Almost any Japanese individual was. :P
[2010/04/19 10:32] Winston Tweak: Hahah
[2010/04/19 10:32] Brent Afterthought: true
[2010/04/19 10:32] Winston Tweak: Yeah, I do. XD
[2010/04/19 10:32] Brent Afterthought: do you see that here at all?
[2010/04/19 10:32] Winston Tweak: A little bit.
[2010/04/19 10:32] Winston Tweak: I see Japan more though
[2010/04/19 10:32] Winston Tweak: Not anime or manga aspects, but just Japan.
[2010/04/19 10:33] Brent Afterthought: 'japan' and 'anime' are different for you then?
[2010/04/19 10:33] Winston Tweak: Oh yes.
[2010/04/19 10:33] Winston Tweak: Very different. ;]
[2010/04/19 10:33] Winston Tweak: anime is just a style of cartoon
[2010/04/19 10:33] Winston Tweak: Japan is a culture
[2010/04/19 10:33] Winston Tweak: that has been around for thousands of years.
[2010/04/19 10:34] Brent Afterthought: one of these takes hints from the old style of japanese wood block printing
[2010/04/19 10:34] Brent Afterthought: it references that
[2010/04/19 10:34] Winston Tweak: The one with that chick getting her head eaten? :P
[2010/04/19 10:35] Brent Afterthought: yesss
[2010/04/19 10:35] Brent Afterthought: exactly
[2010/04/19 10:35] Winston Tweak: Indeed.
[2010/04/19 10:36] Winston Tweak: Another thing
[2010/04/19 10:36] Winston Tweak: Why the naked women? :P
[2010/04/19 10:36] Winston Tweak: Hahaha I'm not complaining or anything
[2010/04/19 10:36] Winston Tweak: but personally
[2010/04/19 10:36] Winston Tweak: I can't look at naked woman as art
[2010/04/19 10:36] Winston Tweak: Woah
[2010/04/19 10:36] Winston Tweak: That's a lie
[2010/04/19 10:36] Brent Afterthought: well that is a great question!
[2010/04/19 10:36] Winston Tweak: Women are art
[2010/04/19 10:36] Brent Afterthought: a VERY important one
[2010/04/19 10:36] Winston Tweak: but
[2010/04/19 10:36] Brent Afterthought: could you think about it
[2010/04/19 10:36] Winston Tweak: when I see a naked one in a piece of art
[2010/04/19 10:37] Brent Afterthought: and try a response?
[2010/04/19 10:37] Winston Tweak: I dunno, it ceases to be just art
[2010/04/19 10:37] Winston Tweak: HAHAHAHAHA
[2010/04/19 10:37] Winston Tweak: No
[2010/04/19 10:37] Winston Tweak: Probably not
[2010/04/19 10:37] Winston Tweak: XD
[2010/04/19 10:37] Winston Tweak: Man
[2010/04/19 10:37] Winston Tweak: I'm so weird in my mind right now
[2010/04/19 10:37] Winston Tweak: I'm not even high yet
[2010/04/19 10:39] Winston Tweak: Seriously though
[2010/04/19 10:39] Winston Tweak: Naked women
[2010/04/19 10:39] Brent Afterthought: think about it
[2010/04/19 10:39] Brent Afterthought: why?
[2010/04/19 10:39] Winston Tweak: I don't know
[2010/04/19 10:39] Winston Tweak: I can't know
[2010/04/19 10:39] Winston Tweak: because if i were to make a gallery
[2010/04/19 10:39] Winston Tweak: Full of art
[2010/04/19 10:39] Winston Tweak: There would be no naked women :P
[10:40] Winston Tweak: What a sight, very well done, Brent. ;]
[10:40] Winston Tweak: I like this one
[10:40] Winston Tweak: Of the lady killing herself a lot
[10:40] Brent Afterthought slides up close to Micah
[10:40] Winston Tweak: Because it's not a sad killing
[10:40] Winston Tweak: It looks like she's setting herself free.
[2010/04/19 10:41] Winston Tweak: :P
[2010/04/19 10:50] Brent Afterthought: when you say 'like' what do yo mean by that?
[2010/04/19 11:21] Winston Tweak: So many different things. XD
[2010/04/19 11:23] Winston Tweak: ;]
[2010/04/19 11:24] Brent Afterthought: what you mean by 'like?
[2010/04/19 11:24] Winston Tweak: That depends on how I'm using it
[2010/04/19 11:24] Winston Tweak: I could be comparing it to something
[2010/04/19 11:24] Brent Afterthought: if you say you like part of one
[2010/04/19 11:24] Brent Afterthought: ahh
[2010/04/19 11:24] Brent Afterthought: ok
[2010/04/19 11:24] Brent Afterthought: yes

[2010/04/19 11:24] Brent Afterthought: can you compare these to anything yo udon't know?
[2010/04/19 11:24] Brent Afterthought: can you give example?
[2010/04/19 11:25] Winston Tweak: No?
[2010/04/19 11:25] Winston Tweak: How could I compare it to something I don't know?
[2010/04/19 11:25] Brent Afterthought: lol
[2010/04/19 11:25] Brent Afterthought: yes
[2010/04/19 11:25] Brent Afterthought: well something you 'imagine' i suppose

[2010/04/19 11:25] Winston Tweak: Interesting question. ;]
[2010/04/19 11:25] Brent Afterthought: like
[2010/04/19 11:25] Brent Afterthought: you have no experience with the violence here
[2010/04/19 11:25] Brent Afterthought: but
[2010/04/19 11:25] Brent Afterthought: it effects you all the same
[2010/04/19 11:26] Winston Tweak: Honestly

[2010/04/19 11:27] Winston Tweak: Happy ones. ;]
[2010/04/19 11:27] Brent Afterthought: in that chibi character

[2010/04/19 11:29] Winston Tweak: to parts of the image
[2010/04/19 11:29] Winston Tweak: and just kind of looked at the smaller details.

[2010/04/19 11:40] Brent Afterthought: in what ways do you think?
[2010/04/19 11:41] Winston Tweak: For one, their religions don`t condemn you to hell for it. :P

VIRTUAL GALLERY DIALOGUE: Bryn Dexler

[2010/04/27 17:49] Bryn Dexler: let's roll
[2010/04/27 17:49] Bryn Dexler: ok
[2010/04/27 17:49] Brent Afterthought: ok
[2010/04/27 17:49] Brent Afterthought: what do you see?
[2010/04/27 17:50] Bryn Dexler: first one - chicki with pink hair?
[2010/04/27 17:50] Bryn Dexler: yes?
[2010/04/27 17:50] Bryn Dexler: or the one next to it
[2010/04/27 17:50] Brent Afterthought: as interlocutor, i am not here to judge... just to record and contemplate...
[2010/04/27 17:51] Brent Afterthought: this not a test
[2010/04/27 17:51] Brent Afterthought: no right or wrong answers
[2010/04/27 17:51] Brent Afterthought: whatever you say is right....
[2010/04/27 17:51] Bryn Dexler: hmm
[2010/04/27 17:51] Bryn Dexler: ok
[2010/04/27 17:51] Bryn Dexler: well
[2010/04/27 17:51] Brent Afterthought: i see a chick with pink hair too...
[2010/04/27 17:51] Brent Afterthought: what else?
[2010/04/27 17:51] Bryn Dexler: i see what looks like a child like animation
[2010/04/27 17:52] Bryn Dexler: but with gleaming sexed up features
[2010/04/27 17:52] Bryn Dexler: like she's in an fhm mag
[2010/04/27 17:52] Brent Afterthought: can you walk to that image?
[2010/04/27 17:52] Bryn Dexler: walk to it
[2010/04/27 17:52] Brent Afterthought: this one?
[2010/04/27 17:52] Brent Afterthought: the one above us?
[2010/04/27 17:52] Bryn Dexler: i'm at it
[2010/04/27 17:53] Brent Afterthought: what is a fhm mag?
[2010/04/27 17:53] Bryn Dexler: oh
[2010/04/27 17:53] Bryn Dexler: like sports models
[2010/04/27 17:53] Brent Afterthought: ahh
[2010/04/27 17:53] Brent Afterthought: good
[2010/04/27 17:53] Brent Afterthought: what else
[2010/04/27 17:53] Bryn Dexler: and she's shooting milk out of her breast
[2010/04/27 17:53] Bryn Dexler: which implies motherhood of sorts
[2010/04/27 17:53] Brent Afterthought: yes
[2010/04/27 17:53] Bryn Dexler: but she looks like a child
[2010/04/27 17:53] Brent Afterthought: this is actually a life size statue...
[2010/04/27 17:54] Bryn Dexler: and nothing like what one would assume a lactating mother would appear to be like
[2010/04/27 17:54] Brent Afterthought: she does look like a child...
[2010/04/27 17:54] Bryn Dexler: ahhhh
[2010/04/27 17:54] Brent Afterthought: mmm
[2010/04/27 17:54] Brent Afterthought: good
[2010/04/27 17:54] Bryn Dexler: it's like a melding of all these understandings and assumptions of womanhood
[2010/04/27 17:54] Bryn Dexler: mother
[2010/04/27 17:54] Bryn Dexler: child
[2010/04/27 17:54] Brent Afterthought: nice...
[2010/04/27 17:54] Bryn Dexler: sex
[2010/04/27 17:54] Bryn Dexler: all together
[2010/04/27 17:54] Brent Afterthought: sex?
[2010/04/27 17:54] Bryn Dexler: her glistening body
[2010/04/27 17:54] Bryn Dexler: breasts
[2010/04/27 17:54] Bryn Dexler: nakedness
[2010/04/27 17:55] Brent Afterthought: mmm
[2010/04/27 17:55] Bryn Dexler: like bodies in magazines
[2010/04/27 17:55] Brent Afterthought: how does that make you feel?
[2010/04/27 17:55] Bryn Dexler: hmm
[2010/04/27 17:56] Bryn Dexler: it kind of is a confusing image at first
[2010/04/27 17:56] Brent Afterthought: mmm
[2010/04/27 17:56] Bryn Dexler: confusing is not the right word - but it's 2am in the morning lol
[2010/04/27 17:56] Bryn Dexler: confronting even
[2010/04/27 17:56] Brent Afterthought: ;)
[2010/04/27 17:56] Brent Afterthought: yes
[2010/04/27 17:56] Brent Afterthought: conflict?
[2010/04/27 17:56] Bryn Dexler: yes
[2010/04/27 17:57] Bryn Dexler: well that's it isn't it - it's conflicting social constructions of what it is to be a girl/woman
[2010/04/27 17:57] Bryn Dexler: perhaps
[2010/04/27 17:58] Brent Afterthought: i like that...
[2010/04/27 17:58] Brent Afterthought: the conflict to which you refer...
[2010/04/27 17:58] Brent Afterthought: do you see that as a personal conflict, or one that the character in the image is exploring?
[2010/04/27 17:59] Bryn Dexler: well it's my assumptions based on my constructions of what women are
[2010/04/27 17:59] Bryn Dexler: so must be personal
[2010/04/27 17:59] Brent Afterthought: ok
[2010/04/27 17:59] Bryn Dexler: at the same time
[2010/04/27 17:59] Bryn Dexler: surely these are wide held assumptions
[2010/04/27 18:00] Bryn Dexler: so perhaps the image is seeking to explore that also
[2010/04/27 18:00] Brent Afterthought: what specific things in the image initiate this idea?
[2010/04/27 18:00] Bryn Dexler: the conflict?
[2010/04/27 18:00] Brent Afterthought: mmm
[2010/04/27 18:01] Bryn Dexler: i worry about exposing my backwater assumptions lol
[2010/04/27 18:01] Bryn Dexler: but
[2010/04/27 18:04] Bryn Dexler: milk for motherhood, body for sex, face of child/innocence. In my head all different things.
[2010/04/27 18:04] Brent Afterthought: your assumptions are anything but backwater...
[2010/04/27 18:05] Brent Afterthought: are you a mother?
[2010/04/27 18:05] Bryn Dexler: no
[2010/04/27 18:05] Brent Afterthought: are you educated formally?
[2010/04/27 18:05] Bryn Dexler: yes
[2010/04/27 18:05] Brent Afterthought: (in the arts)
[2010/04/27 18:05] Bryn Dexler: oo no
[2010/04/27 18:05] Bryn Dexler: no these are my idle uneducated musings
[2010/04/27 18:06] Brent Afterthought: well, if its true you are uneducated formally in the arts, do you think you have the right to make such comments?
[2010/04/27 18:06] Bryn Dexler: yes
[2010/04/27 18:06] Brent Afterthought: why?
[2010/04/27 18:06] Bryn Dexler: art is about perception
[2010/04/27 18:06] Brent Afterthought: yes
[2010/04/27 18:06] Bryn Dexler: everyone is able to perceive
[2010/04/27 18:06] Brent Afterthought: yes
[2010/04/27 18:06] Brent Afterthought: what about gender here?
[2010/04/27 18:07] Bryn Dexler: in the image?
[2010/04/27 18:07] Brent Afterthought: well...
[2010/04/27 18:08] Brent Afterthought: my silly question, which i frame in a confrontational way, is: assuming your a woman in RL, do you think you have special insight into what this image might mean?
[2010/04/27 18:08] Bryn Dexler: no
[2010/04/27 18:08] Bryn Dexler: not at all
[2010/04/27 18:08] Bryn Dexler: that's just what sprang to mind for me
[2010/04/27 18:08] Brent Afterthought: good...
[2010/04/27 18:08] Bryn Dexler: i have no more insight into this then the next person
[2010/04/27 18:09] Bryn Dexler: and what i see could be completely different from what you see
[2010/04/27 18:09] Brent Afterthought: all viewers are on an equal playing field with this kind of art?
[2010/04/27 18:09] Bryn Dexler: no
[2010/04/27 18:09] Brent Afterthought: explain
[2010/04/27 18:09] Bryn Dexler: some would have more insight into what they are looking at
[2010/04/27 18:09] Bryn Dexler: yes we are all able to perceive, but some have appropriate training in analysis
[2010/04/27 18:10] Brent Afterthought: mmm
[2010/04/27 18:10] Brent Afterthought: i think this work has something to do with anime culture...
[2010/04/27 18:10] Brent Afterthought: which i don't know about actually
[2010/04/27 18:10] Bryn Dexler: either do i lol
[2010/04/27 18:10] Bryn Dexler: what do you see?
[2010/04/27 18:10] Brent Afterthought: i think it has to do with sex too
[2010/04/27 18:10] Bryn Dexler: tell
[2010/04/27 18:11] Brent Afterthought: which i do have some familiarity with
[2010/04/27 18:11] Brent Afterthought: smiles
[2010/04/27 18:11] Brent Afterthought: well
[2010/04/27 18:11] Brent Afterthought: i see conflict
[2010/04/27 18:11] Bryn Dexler: you see male as well?
[2010/04/27 18:11] Bryn Dexler: what
[2010/04/27 18:11] Bryn Dexler: conflict
[2010/04/27 18:11] Brent Afterthought: i think i see as a male, yes
[2010/04/27 18:11] Bryn Dexler: likewise
[2010/04/27 18:11] Bryn Dexler: tell
[2010/04/27 18:12] Brent Afterthought: i see stereotypes about women and sexuality caricatured
[2010/04/27 18:12] Bryn Dexler: mmhmm
[2010/04/27 18:12] Brent Afterthought: in kind of a funny way, that is not funny actually...
[2010/04/27 18:12] Brent Afterthought: not in this piece so much, but in others
[2010/04/27 18:12] Bryn Dexler: i think it's meant to confront us in that respect, and our assumptions
[2010/04/27 18:12] Bryn Dexler: no?
[2010/04/27 18:13] Brent Afterthought: yes
[2010/04/27 18:13] Brent Afterthought: i agree
[2010/04/27 18:13] Brent Afterthought: are there any other images that confront you in this way?
[2010/04/27 18:13] Bryn Dexler: in here?
[2010/04/27 18:13] Brent Afterthought: yah
[2010/04/27 18:13] Bryn Dexler: this room?
[2010/04/27 18:13] Brent Afterthought: mmm
[2010/04/27 18:14] Bryn Dexler: i find alot of them a little confronting
[2010/04/27 18:14] Brent Afterthought: let's talk about one more, if your not too tired
[2010/04/27 18:14] Bryn Dexler: sure
[2010/04/27 18:14] Bryn Dexler: go for it
[2010/04/27 18:14] Brent Afterthought: i am following you sister
[2010/04/27 18:14] Bryn Dexler: oh lol
[2010/04/27 18:14] Brent Afterthought: ;)
[2010/04/27 18:16] Bryn Dexler: hmmm
[2010/04/27 18:16] Bryn Dexler: i hate choosing
[2010/04/27 18:17] Brent Afterthought: hell for you is a box of chocolates
[2010/04/27 18:17] Bryn Dexler: yes
[2010/04/27 18:17] Brent Afterthought: suffer then
[2010/04/27 18:17] Bryn Dexler: no there's no choosing there i take all
[2010/04/27 18:17] Brent Afterthought: me too!
[2010/04/27 18:17] Bryn Dexler: how kind of you
[2010/04/27 18:17] Brent Afterthought: no problem
[2010/04/27 18:17] Brent Afterthought: my professor will think i am a rude and uncaring asshole
[2010/04/27 18:18] Bryn Dexler: he'd be correct
[2010/04/27 18:18] Brent Afterthought: for talking to you that way
[2010/04/27 18:18] Brent Afterthought: i would argue
[2010/04/27 18:18] Brent Afterthought: that it is part of our dynamic
[2010/04/27 18:18] Bryn Dexler: hmmm
[2010/04/27 18:18] Bryn Dexler: would you?
[2010/04/27 18:18] Bryn Dexler: is it?
[2010/04/27 18:18] Brent Afterthought: me telling you to suffer?
[2010/04/27 18:18] Bryn Dexler: mmhmm
[2010/04/27 18:19] Brent Afterthought: well...
[2010/04/27 18:19] Brent Afterthought: i say it, but i do so in a sarcastic way
[2010/04/27 18:19] Brent Afterthought: i don't actually want you to suffer
[2010/04/27 18:19] Brent Afterthought: if i did
[2010/04/27 18:19] Brent Afterthought: i don't think i would just say: suffer then
[2010/04/27 18:19] Brent Afterthought: i say it in part
[2010/04/27 18:20] Brent Afterthought: cause i know you are a rebellious person
[2010/04/27 18:20] Brent Afterthought: and you rebelling against my silliness...
[2010/04/27 18:20] Brent Afterthought: may in some ways be empowering to you
[2010/04/27 18:20] Bryn Dexler: you make me laugh
[2010/04/27 18:20] Brent Afterthought: you make me smile
[2010/04/27 18:20] Brent Afterthought: ;)
[2010/04/27 18:21] Brent Afterthought: suffering...
[2010/04/27 18:21] Bryn Dexler: mm smile suffering
[2010/04/27 18:21] Bryn Dexler: suffering smiles
[2010/04/27 18:21] Brent Afterthought: there is alot of going on in these images no?
[2010/04/27 18:21] Bryn Dexler: yes
[2010/04/27 18:21] Brent Afterthought: what kind of suffering?
[2010/04/27 18:22] Bryn Dexler: in the pictures?
[2010/04/27 18:22] Brent Afterthought: let's look at the Nara piece...
[2010/04/27 18:22] Bryn Dexler: ok
[2010/04/27 18:22] Brent Afterthought: this is a painting
[2010/04/27 18:22] Brent Afterthought: in rl
[2010/04/27 18:23] Brent Afterthought: i think it is about 5x6 feet
[2010/04/27 18:23] Brent Afterthought: its big
[2010/04/27 18:23] Brent Afterthought: is there suffering in here?
[2010/04/27 18:23] Bryn Dexler: it doesn't look very pleased
[2010/04/27 18:23] Bryn Dexler: it looks irritated
[2010/04/27 18:23] Brent Afterthought: mmm
[2010/04/27 18:23] Bryn Dexler: frustrated
[2010/04/27 18:23] Bryn Dexler: fed up
[2010/04/27 18:23] Brent Afterthought: yes
[2010/04/27 18:23] Bryn Dexler: suffering of sorts
[2010/04/27 18:23] Bryn Dexler: uncomfortable
[2010/04/27 18:24] Brent Afterthought: what part in particular makes you feel that?
[2010/04/27 18:24] Bryn Dexler: stance
[2010/04/27 18:24] Brent Afterthought: mmm
[2010/04/27 18:24] Bryn Dexler: mouth
[2010/04/27 18:24] Brent Afterthought: yes
[2010/04/27 18:24] Bryn Dexler: fist
[2010/04/27 18:24] Brent Afterthought: mmm
[2010/04/27 18:24] Bryn Dexler: body
[2010/04/27 18:25] Bryn Dexler: um
[2010/04/27 18:25] Brent Afterthought: color?
[2010/04/27 18:25] Bryn Dexler: hmmm
[2010/04/27 18:26] Bryn Dexler: i find the colours a tad gawdy and grotesque together
[2010/04/27 18:26] Bryn Dexler: but that's just personal tastes
[2010/04/27 18:26] Brent Afterthought: i like your personal tastes
[2010/04/27 18:27] Bryn Dexler: and isolated and alone it looks
[2010/04/27 18:27] Brent Afterthought: i find the colors 'cute'
[2010/04/27 18:27] Bryn Dexler: hmm - really?
[2010/04/27 18:27] Bryn Dexler: they look dated
[2010/04/27 18:27] Brent Afterthought: yes
[2010/04/27 18:27] Bryn Dexler: she's in a sea of fifties blue
[2010/04/27 18:27] Brent Afterthought: they look cartoonish
[2010/04/27 18:27] Bryn Dexler: yes
[2010/04/27 18:27] Bryn Dexler: like from old story books
[2010/04/27 18:27] Brent Afterthought: yes
[2010/04/27 18:27] Bryn Dexler: your grandmother would have
[2010/04/27 18:27] Brent Afterthought: mmm
[2010/04/27 18:28] Brent Afterthought: do they match with the ideas you talked about before?
[2010/04/27 18:29] Bryn Dexler: ummm
[2010/04/27 18:29] Bryn Dexler: as in stereotypical woman?
[2010/04/27 18:29] Bryn Dexler: features?
[2010/04/27 18:29] Brent Afterthought: well..

bryn gallery_002
Bryn and Brent looking at Nara

[2010/04/27 18:29] Brent Afterthought: i was referring to the way you described the image first off
[2010/04/27 18:30] Brent Afterthought: the things you refereed to
[2010/04/27 18:30] Brent Afterthought: mostly had to do with the character him/herself
[2010/04/27 18:30] Brent Afterthought: you paused when i asked if color was sending you the same message
[2010/04/27 18:30] Brent Afterthought: for me...
[2010/04/27 18:30] Brent Afterthought: the message is different
[2010/04/27 18:31] Bryn Dexler: hmmm
[2010/04/27 18:31] Bryn Dexler: yes
[2010/04/27 18:31] Bryn Dexler: this more challenges images of perfection
[2010/04/27 18:32] Bryn Dexler: maybe?
[2010/04/27 18:32] Bryn Dexler: this is far from an image of stereotypical perfect person
[2010/04/27 18:33] Bryn Dexler: it's proportions border on commercially grotesque
[2010/04/27 18:33] Bryn Dexler: although that's a bit of a harsh word for it
[2010/04/27 18:33] Bryn Dexler: and she looks unhappy
[2010/04/27 18:33] Bryn Dexler: omg this is just my insecurities spewing forth lol
[2010/04/27 18:34] Brent Afterthought: lol
[2010/04/27 18:34] Brent Afterthought: mine too
[2010/04/27 18:34] Brent Afterthought: the images bother me
[2010/04/27 18:34] Brent Afterthought: trouble me
[2010/04/27 18:34] Bryn Dexler: i think it makes you think about what our perceptions are of women, and have we any right to assume one is better than the other, one is less of a person than the other
[2010/04/27 18:34] Bryn Dexler: why does this one have to look unhappy
[2010/04/27 18:35] Bryn Dexler: why are we bothered when we look at it
[2010/04/27 18:35] Bryn Dexler: why do they trouble you
[2010/04/27 18:35] Bryn Dexler: i'm off on a tangent
[2010/04/27 18:35] Bryn Dexler: it's also child like
[2010/04/27 18:35] Brent Afterthought: yes...
[2010/04/27 18:35] Brent Afterthought: child like
[2010/04/27 18:35] Bryn Dexler: so i guess you could take that path and explore it
[2010/04/27 18:35] Brent Afterthought: that runs through a lot of this work
[2010/04/27 18:35] Bryn Dexler: yeah
[2010/04/27 18:35] Bryn Dexler: true
[2010/04/27 18:36] Brent Afterthought: a lactating child
[2010/04/27 18:36] Bryn Dexler: yes
[2010/04/27 18:36] Brent Afterthought: to your left are smiling teens committing ritual suicide
[2010/04/27 18:36] Bryn Dexler: yes
[2010/04/27 18:37] Brent Afterthought: i think we arrive at one of the important dimensions of this work...
[2010/04/27 18:37] Brent Afterthought: the questions that it raises... the ones you so eloquently articulated just now
[2010/04/27 18:37] Brent Afterthought: do the questions have answers?
[2010/04/27 18:38] Bryn Dexler: all questions have answers i guess
[2010/04/27 18:38] Bryn Dexler: we pick the ones we like
[2010/04/27 18:38] Brent Afterthought: i would disagree with you here
[2010/04/27 18:38] Bryn Dexler: hmm
[2010/04/27 18:38] Bryn Dexler: why is that
[2010/04/27 18:39] Brent Afterthought: at best...
[2010/04/27 18:39] Brent Afterthought: the questions have ambiguous answers...
[2010/04/27 18:39] Brent Afterthought: personal ones
[2010/04/27 18:39] Bryn Dexler: ambiguous answers are answers none the less
[2010/04/27 18:39] Brent Afterthought: agreed...
[2010/04/27 18:40] Brent Afterthought: but, in my mind, the questions are staged in such a way as to subvert answers...
[2010/04/27 18:40] Bryn Dexler: well it's all about the right questions in the first place isn't it. And they could well be to subvert answers.
[2010/04/27 18:42] Brent Afterthought: well....
[2010/04/27 18:42] Brent Afterthought: i would disagree again
[2010/04/27 18:42] Brent Afterthought: because invariably, you as a woman, me as a man,
[2010/04/27 18:42] Brent Afterthought: you as a brit , me as an american
[2010/04/27 18:43] Brent Afterthought: you as young, me as washed up
[2010/04/27 18:43] Bryn Dexler: poppycock
[2010/04/27 18:43] Brent Afterthought: these things would lead us to different questions i suppose
[2010/04/27 18:44] Brent Afterthought: and i could never believe, or don't want to believe, that one set of questions is more valid than the other...
[2010/04/27 18:44] Bryn Dexler: hmmm... maybe
[2010/04/27 18:51] Brent Afterthought: hmm

[2010/04/27 18:53] Bryn Dexler: what else
[2010/04/27 18:53] Bryn Dexler: more questions
[2010/04/27 18:53] Bryn Dexler: what's the go
[2010/04/27 18:53] Brent Afterthought: ;)
[2010/04/27 18:54] Brent Afterthought: i lost my train of thought
[2010/04/27 18:54] Bryn Dexler: i don't think i had one
[2010/04/27 18:54] Brent Afterthought: lol
[2010/04/27 18:54] Brent Afterthought: we were talking about questions.. some being more correct than others
[2010/04/27 18:54] Bryn Dexler: oh yeah
[2010/04/27 18:54] Bryn Dexler: well i guess if art's about perception, and all are open to perceive, all questions and answers must be of some relevance
[2010/04/27 18:55] Brent Afterthought: i think there are no correct ???'s or A's
[2010/04/27 18:55] Brent Afterthought: yah
[2010/04/27 18:55] Brent Afterthought: totally right?
[2010/04/27 18:55] Bryn Dexler: lol
[2010/04/27 18:55] Brent Afterthought: but...
[2010/04/27 18:55] Brent Afterthought: John Dewy
[2010/04/27 18:55] Brent Afterthought: a philosopher of education suggests
[2010/04/27 18:56] Brent Afterthought: that we can all look at a flower and lose our selves in its beauty...
[2010/04/27 18:56] Brent Afterthought: but to really know a flower.. you should understand soil. air, perhaps the history of the breed...
[2010/04/27 18:57] Bryn Dexler: well exactly. If you don't know what the fuck you're on about, your opinion, your view, what you see, what you understand, is hindered to an extent
[2010/04/27 18:58] Bryn Dexler: full appreciation of what you are presented with isn't impossible, but i reckon it's kinda hindered
[2010/04/27 18:58] Bryn Dexler: there's a multitude of things in these images i'm probably missing
[2010/04/27 18:58] Bryn Dexler: but
[2010/04/27 18:58] Bryn Dexler: i think with art
[2010/04/27 18:58] Bryn Dexler: maybe
[2010/04/27 18:58] Bryn Dexler: everyone's viewpoint is important
[2010/04/27 18:58] Bryn Dexler: it's purpose is to emote
[2010/04/27 18:59] Bryn Dexler: regardless of educational background (for most i'd imagine_
[2010/04/27 18:59] Bryn Dexler: feelings
[2010/04/27 18:59] Bryn Dexler: so whatever feelings are felt, by whoever, they're all relevant to an extent.
[2010/04/27 18:59] Bryn Dexler: even if they lack the skill with which to completely comprehend what they are analyzing
[2010/04/27 18:59] Brent Afterthought: how lovely and empowering those words are
[2010/04/27 19:00] Bryn Dexler: hmm
[2010/04/27 19:00] Bryn Dexler: i don't know
[2010/04/27 19:00] Bryn Dexler: i guess it depends on who made the image, what their intention was.
[2010/04/27 19:00] Bryn Dexler: who they want to connect with
[2010/04/27 19:00] Bryn Dexler: but i just figure, in my limited understanding lol, that artists want all to feel their work
[2010/04/27 19:02] Brent Afterthought: mmm
[2010/04/27 19:02] Bryn Dexler: yarrr
[2010/04/27 19:02] Bryn Dexler: hmm
[2010/04/27 19:03] Brent Afterthought: the messages are 'clearly ambiguous' to me
[2010/04/27 19:03] Brent Afterthought: yes... i am educated in art
[2010/04/27 19:03] Brent Afterthought: i know about form
[2010/04/27 19:03] Brent Afterthought: but, i agree with you...
[2010/04/27 19:04] Brent Afterthought: all opinions and perceptions matter in some way
[2010/04/27 19:04] Brent Afterthought: i think artists want us to engage their work
[2010/04/27 19:04] Brent Afterthought: u think that is what we did tonight
[2010/04/27 19:04] Bryn Dexler: hmm
[2010/04/27 19:04] Brent Afterthought: i learned some things about the work
[2010/04/27 19:05] Brent Afterthought: that i never knew
[2010/04/27 19:05] Brent Afterthought: also some things about you, and self
[2010/04/27 19:05] Brent Afterthought: all this through dialogue
[2010/04/27 19:05] Bryn Dexler: oo i don’t like the last bit
[2010/04/27 19:05] Bryn Dexler: but i guess it's inevitable maybe
[2010/04/27 19:06] Brent Afterthought: explain
[2010/04/27 19:06] Bryn Dexler: um
[2010/04/27 19:06] Bryn Dexler: i worry about exposing too much of myself to you - you see through me a bit
[2010/04/27 19:06] Bryn Dexler: anyway
[2010/04/27 19:07] Brent Afterthought: transparency is the new secrecy
[2010/04/27 19:07] Bryn Dexler: can you tell me what's really going on in the pictures next time?
[2010/04/27 19:07] Bryn Dexler: no
[2010/04/27 19:07] Brent Afterthought: lol
[2010/04/27 19:07] Brent Afterthought: i don't know!!!
[2010/04/27 19:07] Bryn Dexler: you do so
[2010/04/27 19:07] Brent Afterthought: no...
[2010/04/27 19:07] Bryn Dexler: then tell me your 'perceptions'
[2010/04/27 19:07] Brent Afterthought: i am an art educator... not an interpreter
[2010/04/27 19:08] Brent Afterthought: i want to learn
[2010/04/27 19:08] Bryn Dexler: i'm an art nothing - how come i had to interpret
[2010/04/27 19:08] Bryn Dexler: no fair
[2010/04/27 19:08] Brent Afterthought: and foster dialogue about art
[2010/04/27 19:08] Brent Afterthought: not shove meaning down someones throat

[2010/04/27 19:10] Brent Afterthought: i did tell you a bit of my theory
[2010/04/27 19:10] Brent Afterthought: that the questions these images ask are subversive
[2010/04/27 19:11] Brent Afterthought: and i think so because of the disconnect between form and content...
